SUMMARY:Talking Climate: How to have Conversations that Connect
DESCRIPTION:The single strongest predictor of climate action is whether people talk about it. But how to do that in these times of intersecting poly-crisis\, where mention of climate change is made to feel taboo\, socially? \nKaren Crosby of Regenerate BC will facilitate an interactive workshop on strategies and best practices to empower you to use your best voice in communicating solutions to what we all fundamentally care about. The workshop will focus (not exclusively) on solutions related to transportation.

SUMMARY:Food Synergy: Film Screening and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Food Sustainability Documentary screening and panel discussion \nThe global food system is responsible for up to one third of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions\, making it one of the largest contributors to climate change. \nFood Synergy is a one-of-a-kind feature documentary in the sustainability genre. The filmmakers analyze the whole food supply chain. They uncover the challenges and\, more importantly\, the solutions that everyday food heroes locally and across the world are enacting in each level of the food supply chain to make food loss and waste a thing of the past. \nJoin the filmmaker and fellow Unitarian Vivian Davidson-Castro at the Fireside Room at the Vancouver Unitarian centre on January 26th from 1-3 for a screening of the documentary followed by a Q&A. Donations welcome! \nwww.foodsynergymovie.ca

SUMMARY:Climate Activism. What we can do to make an impact
DESCRIPTION:The impacts of a changing climate are in our faces daily. \nAre you anxious and not knowing what to do? \nHundreds of BC citizens took direct action against the fossil fuel perpetrators of the crisis and were arrested on Burnaby Mountain for opposition to TMX\, a pipeline carrying diluted bitumen from the tar sands to Burrard Inlet. \nThis forum will feature a panel of arrestees\, including members of VanU\, who will tell us what they did and why. Come for inspiration as we discuss best options for moving forward and for a challenge to step up in community in defense of a more secure future. \nThe anthology\, Standing on High Ground: Civil Disobedience on Burnaby Mountain\, containing first hand accounts and court testimonies of 25 arrestees\, will be available for sale. \n  \nThis forum is sponsored by the Environment Team.

And it means that people in Canada can access Canadian fish\, can eat local fish\, know where it comes from. and know what their dollars are supporting. To me that’s incredibly meaningful.” – Sonia Strobel\, Co-founder and CEO\, Skipper Otto. \nSonia will join us for conversation after the film. \nAll welcome. Snacks provided.

SUMMARY:Save Our Salmon Film Series: Salmon Secrets
DESCRIPTION:Join us for two important and informative films about how we can support wild salmon in BC. \nClayoquot Sound is a place of wonder—a globally significant rainforest and coastline\, home to whales\, wolves and bears. The First Nations people of this coast are known as salmon people\, their culture thrived here for millennia sustained by abundant wild salmon. All this and more is threatened by open net-pen salmon farms. \nFish farming is pushing wild salmon to the brink of extinction. The federal government has promised to remove fish farms from BC waters by 2025\, but now industry is pushing back with false solutions. This film looks at the impacts of salmon farming through the eyes of those fighting to protect wild salmon from extinction. \nAll welcome. Snacks provided. \nOur second film screening will be held at the same time on Sunday\, Nov. 3.

SUMMARY:Forum – Should we keep the Vancouver Park Board?
DESCRIPTION:The Vancouver Unitarians will host a one hour forum\, with questions welcomed\, on the future of the Vancouver Park Board with Parks chair Brennan Bastyovanszky\, at the Vancouver Unitarians Sanctuary.  The event will be also be  live-streamed on YouTube. \nLast December\, Mayor Sim announced his plan to dissolve the elected Vancouver Parks Board\, and a council majority endorsed it – with no public vote on the issue. Premier David Eby (whose B.C. government must approve the change) said he agreed in principle\, but would wait for the results of the Oct. 19 provincial election before deciding. \nThe forum will discuss if we need the elected Park Board. What are the pros and cons of this move? Should it go to a public vote first? You can send your questions for Brennan to forum organizer Stanley Tromp at stromp[at]telus[dot]net \nPlease return to this page on June 2 at 12:30 to watch the live stream.

SUMMARY:Sunday Forum: More Big Trees in Vancouver
DESCRIPTION:East Vancouver is hotter in summer than the west side of Vancouver. Why? Primarily the lack of shade from the tree canopy.  Shouldn’t the City of Vancouver prioritize more big trees on the east side? Oliver Gatzke would like the City of Vancouver to consider this issue. Come and find out why.

SUMMARY:Exploring the Intersections of Colonialism\, Racism\, and Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:This is a special event jointly sponsored by the Vancouver Unitarians’ IPA (IBPOC Plus Allies)\, Environment Team\, Refugee Team and Social Justice Team! \nWe will share an evening of dinner\, learning\, stories\, and possibly\, solutions. \nClick below to watch a video of the event: \n \n  \nWhen: Saturday January 20th 2024 5:30pm \nWhere: Hewett Hall 949 W 49th Ave\, Vancouver  \nPlease register below!  \nIn addition to the potluck dinner and hearing from guest IBPOC speakers\, there will be a photo exhibition called Dispossessed but Defiant.  \n* \nAbout the speakers  \nEsther Leung-Kong \nEsther is a Vancouver-based Chinese-Canadian Author who aims to educate children on diversity\, immigrant struggles\, and cultural representation. She is a mother of three\, she was born in Hong Kong and immigrated to Vancouver\, Canada (Coast Salish Territories) when she was 9 years old. \nEsther’s passion includes advocating for justice & compassion both locally and globally through her work at the non-profit organization Culture Regeneration Research Society and the local grassroots charity Vancouver Urban Ministries\, leadership development for young people\, and inspiring others through music. Throughout the years she has been raising awareness among the Chinese immigrant community about colonial history and treatment of Indigenous people. In 2022 she led a team to translate the “Truth and Reconciliation 94 Calls to Action” into Chinese.  \nShe is the author of the children’s bilingual book “Wonderfully Made 奇妙的傑作”.  \n  \nSevern Cullis-Suzuki \nSevern has been an activist for intergenerational justice – justice for future generations–her whole life.  Deeply concerned about the environment as a child\, she started the Environmental Children’s Organization with friends in grade five\, which culminated a few years later in a speech to the UN Earth Summit in 1992 at age 12.  The speech is still making the rounds as “the girl who silenced the world for 5 minutes.” \nToday Severn’s focus is the nexus of decline in diversity of biodiversity\, worldviews\, economies\, language\, traditional knowledge and identity.  She holds an M.Sc. in Ethnoecology from the University of Victoria\, and is currently a Vanier and Public scholar PhD candidate studying endangered language revitalization.  Severn is now executive director of the David Suzuki Foundation and\, with her husband Judson Brown and their two sons\, shares her  time between Vancouver and  Haida Gwaii\, off the coast of British Columbia. \nFor Severn’s full bio to see what she was up to between 12 years old and now\, check out https://severncullissuzuki.com/ \n  \nKwiis Hamilton \nKwiis Hamilton is Nuu Chah Nulth (Opechesaht) and Sto:lo (Lequamel). His parents are Kwitsel Tatel (Patricia Kelly) and Haa’yuups (Ron Hamilton). He practices jewelry making\, painting\, printmaking\, spoken word poetry\, wood carving\, singing\, dancing\, and storytelling. Through the creation of well-made objects Kwiis expresses his values and tells modern and traditional stories. His work sheds light on the obsolete systems of domination and exploitation upon which the foundation of the colonial project of canada is built. He hopes to inspire critical thinking and radical expressions of a healthy\, educated\, safe\, and joy filled community\, as well as a shared sense of belonging rooted in self location and a strong spiritual identity. \n  \nKyi Min Saw \nMy family emigrated to Singapore from Burma when I was five years old. After graduating grade 12\, we moved again to Vancouver where I attended UBC and became a lab technologist. I was a member of a group of Burma human rights activists called the Burma Roundtable (1999 to 2009). I later joined a charity founded by Rod Germine called Just Aid Foundation (2001 to 2011). JAF fundraised to support the Mae Tao Clinic\, a hospital and medical school that provides essential healthcare to refugees on the Thai-Burma border. JAF also supported Assistance Association for Political Prisoners\, an organization within Burma that advocates for the release of prisoners of conscience held by the junta. \n* \n(Image credit:  Leonardo Basso / unsplash)

Look for artisans selling cards\, pottery\, jewellery\, knitted sweaters and scarves\, hand-painted silk scarves\, photos\, honey\, candles\, and some surprises. \nThe hours of the sale range from 10am to 2pm and 6:30pm to 9pm (before and after the Candlelight Service). \nMr. SHARP is back! Bring your knives\, scissors\, and wit for sharpening. \n10% of proceeds go to the Environment Committee Green Fund that supports greening the church and other worthy environmental projects. Our current campaign is to raise funds to replace the (leaky) windows in Hewett Hall (and then add heat pumps).
