SUMMARY:Sunday Forum: More Big Trees in Vancouver
DESCRIPTION:East Vancouver is hotter in summer than the west side of Vancouver. Why? Primarily the lack of shade from the tree canopy.  Shouldn’t the City of Vancouver prioritize more big trees on the east side? Oliver Gatzke would like the City of Vancouver to consider this issue. Come and find out why.

SUMMARY:Exploring the Intersections of Colonialism\, Racism\, and Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:This is a special event jointly sponsored by the Vancouver Unitarians’ IPA (IBPOC Plus Allies)\, Environment Team\, Refugee Team and Social Justice Team! \nWe will share an evening of dinner\, learning\, stories\, and possibly\, solutions. \nClick below to watch a video of the event: \n \n  \nWhen: Saturday January 20th 2024 5:30pm \nWhere: Hewett Hall 949 W 49th Ave\, Vancouver  \nPlease register below!  \nIn addition to the potluck dinner and hearing from guest IBPOC speakers\, there will be a photo exhibition called Dispossessed but Defiant.  \n* \nAbout the speakers  \nEsther Leung-Kong \nEsther is a Vancouver-based Chinese-Canadian Author who aims to educate children on diversity\, immigrant struggles\, and cultural representation. She is a mother of three\, she was born in Hong Kong and immigrated to Vancouver\, Canada (Coast Salish Territories) when she was 9 years old. \nEsther’s passion includes advocating for justice & compassion both locally and globally through her work at the non-profit organization Culture Regeneration Research Society and the local grassroots charity Vancouver Urban Ministries\, leadership development for young people\, and inspiring others through music. Throughout the years she has been raising awareness among the Chinese immigrant community about colonial history and treatment of Indigenous people. In 2022 she led a team to translate the “Truth and Reconciliation 94 Calls to Action” into Chinese.  \nShe is the author of the children’s bilingual book “Wonderfully Made 奇妙的傑作”.  \n  \nSevern Cullis-Suzuki \nSevern has been an activist for intergenerational justice – justice for future generations–her whole life.  Deeply concerned about the environment as a child\, she started the Environmental Children’s Organization with friends in grade five\, which culminated a few years later in a speech to the UN Earth Summit in 1992 at age 12.  The speech is still making the rounds as “the girl who silenced the world for 5 minutes.” \nToday Severn’s focus is the nexus of decline in diversity of biodiversity\, worldviews\, economies\, language\, traditional knowledge and identity.  She holds an M.Sc. in Ethnoecology from the University of Victoria\, and is currently a Vanier and Public scholar PhD candidate studying endangered language revitalization.  Severn is now executive director of the David Suzuki Foundation and\, with her husband Judson Brown and their two sons\, shares her  time between Vancouver and  Haida Gwaii\, off the coast of British Columbia. \nFor Severn’s full bio to see what she was up to between 12 years old and now\, check out https://severncullissuzuki.com/ \n  \nKwiis Hamilton \nKwiis Hamilton is Nuu Chah Nulth (Opechesaht) and Sto:lo (Lequamel). His parents are Kwitsel Tatel (Patricia Kelly) and Haa’yuups (Ron Hamilton). He practices jewelry making\, painting\, printmaking\, spoken word poetry\, wood carving\, singing\, dancing\, and storytelling. Through the creation of well-made objects Kwiis expresses his values and tells modern and traditional stories. His work sheds light on the obsolete systems of domination and exploitation upon which the foundation of the colonial project of canada is built. He hopes to inspire critical thinking and radical expressions of a healthy\, educated\, safe\, and joy filled community\, as well as a shared sense of belonging rooted in self location and a strong spiritual identity. \n  \nKyi Min Saw \nMy family emigrated to Singapore from Burma when I was five years old. After graduating grade 12\, we moved again to Vancouver where I attended UBC and became a lab technologist. I was a member of a group of Burma human rights activists called the Burma Roundtable (1999 to 2009). I later joined a charity founded by Rod Germine called Just Aid Foundation (2001 to 2011). JAF fundraised to support the Mae Tao Clinic\, a hospital and medical school that provides essential healthcare to refugees on the Thai-Burma border. JAF also supported Assistance Association for Political Prisoners\, an organization within Burma that advocates for the release of prisoners of conscience held by the junta. \n* \n(Image credit:  Leonardo Basso / unsplash)

SUMMARY:Holiday Craft Fair
DESCRIPTION:Come find quality hand-made gifts and help support our Green Fund. Artisans are mostly from our own congregation. Look for artisans selling cards\, pottery\, jewellery\, knitted sweaters and scarves\, hand-painted silk scarves\, photos\, honey\, candles\, and some surprises. \nThe hours of the sale range from 10am to 2pm and 6:30pm to 9pm (before and after the Candlelight Service). \nMr. SHARP is back! Bring your knives\, scissors\, and wit for sharpening. \n10% of proceeds go to the Environment Committee Green Fund that supports greening the church and other worthy environmental projects. Our current campaign is to raise funds to replace the (leaky) windows in Hewett Hall (and then add heat pumps).

SUMMARY:Sunday Service: Truth\, Courage and Solutions for the Climate Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Mary Bennett and Rosemary Cornell\nHow can you make a difference in changing the direction of climate change? What can Unitarians do–whether locally\, regionally or nationally? How can you talk about the climate crisis to people who seem uncommitted to change? These and other questions will be explored by Mary Bennett and Rosemary Cornell\, members of the UCV Environment Team. Mary and Rosemary are in a 10-session circle inspired by the work in “All We Can Save: Truth\, Courage and Solutions for the Climate Crisis. \nMary Bennett has been attending UCV since 1989 and was the Executive Director of the Canadian Unitarian Council from 2000-2008. She’s part of the Earth Spirituality Group at UCV and coordinates a Metro Vancouver Zero Waste book group where she first discovered the book All We Can Save. \nRosemary Cornell is a retired Biochemistry professor (SFU). She was drawn to the UCV community in late 2018 after meeting some inspiring Enviro-Team members at climate rallies and other front-line action\, such as resistance against TMX.  She is a member of the Environment\, Zero-waste\, and gardening teams. \nDownload the Order of Service\nWeekly services\n\nJoin us in person in our Sanctuary or live online at https://ucv.im/live for our weekly Sunday Service\, beginning each week at 11am

SUMMARY:Circles of Voices: Benefit Concert featuring Luke Wallace
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a very special evening of songs and stories – a benefit concert for RAVEN (Respecting Aboriginal Values and Environmental Needs). \nLuke Wallace headlines a show that will bring together storytellers\, spoken word and a chorus of voices to sing songs of praise and protest for our world. This event is a fundraiser for RAVEN’s Breathing Lands campaign\, supporting 10 Indigenous Nations who are in court to protect Canada’s boreal peatlands: lands and waters that sequester more carbon than the Amazon rainforest. \nThis benefit concert is supported by UCV’s Social Justice and Environment teams. Tickets: https://fundraise.raventrust.com/breathing \nThe Breathing Lands are a vast peatland in northern Ontario whose wetland ecosystems\, stewarded since time immemorial by Anishinaabe caretakers\, act as the lungs of planet Earth. These rich lands and waters are at risk\, as the Ford government pushes to exploit minerals in what they call ‘The Ring of Fire’.
