SUMMARY:Talking Climate: How to have Conversations that Connect
DESCRIPTION:The single strongest predictor of climate action is whether people talk about it. But how to do that in these times of intersecting poly-crisis\, where mention of climate change is made to feel taboo\, socially? \nKaren Crosby of Regenerate BC will facilitate an interactive workshop on strategies and best practices to empower you to use your best voice in communicating solutions to what we all fundamentally care about. The workshop will focus (not exclusively) on solutions related to transportation.

SUMMARY:Forum: Resolution on the Endorsement of the CUC Motion to Repudiate the Doctrine of Discovery and the Doctrine of Terra Nullius
DESCRIPTION:This event has passed.  The slide deck for this forum can be found here. \nPlease click here for additional reading materials related to this forum. \n  \nThe Doctrine of Discovery comprises several 15th century papal bulls proclaiming that Christian nations had the right to take possession of the lands of non-Christians to save their souls by Christianizing them. The Doctrine of Terra Nullius (vacant land) was considered to apply to land not yet occupied by Christians\, so sovereignty\, title and jurisdiction could be claimed over it. \nPlease join John Omielan\,  the Social Justice Team and the IPA Team to discuss a Resolution on the Endorsement of the CUC Motion to Repudiate the Doctrine of Discovery and of Terra Nullius. The SJ Team will request that the board submit this resolution for a vote by the VanU congregation at the June AGM. \nThe text of the resolution can be found here. \nThis resolution builds on the work that members of the Environment\, IPA and SJ teams started in 2022.  Here is a recording  of the Doctrine of Discovery and Terra Nullius Forum held on November 20\, 2022. This forum was instrumental in helping the CUC draft and approve their motions to repudiate the Doctrine of Discovery and the Doctrine of Terra Nullius. \nLinks to the CUC motions are listed below: \nCUC Approves Motion to Repudiate Doctrine of Discovery \nhttps://cuc.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Adding-Terra-Nullius-to-CUC-2023-Doctrine-of-Discovery-Resolution-Approved.pdf

SUMMARY:Forum: Renewal of Covenant of Healthy Relations
DESCRIPTION:Join members of the Healthy Relations Team and others this Sunday for a forum to begin the process of renewing our Covenant of Healthy Relations. Our present Covenant was approved in a congregation-wide vote 20 years ago. \nCovenants are important as they are promises to each other about how we want to be treated\, how to respect others and about how to handle disagreements\, which are a part of any kind of community. Renewal should be part of the process for ensuring that our Covenant is a living document that works for us today. This renewal is about checking in on how the Covenant has served us\, how it has worked and if it needs adjustments. We will invite your reflections on these questions and your ideas about what kind of covenant will serve us going forward. \nWe look forward to your participation!

SUMMARY:Climate Activism. What we can do to make an impact
DESCRIPTION:The impacts of a changing climate are in our faces daily. \nAre you anxious and not knowing what to do? \nHundreds of BC citizens took direct action against the fossil fuel perpetrators of the crisis and were arrested on Burnaby Mountain for opposition to TMX\, a pipeline carrying diluted bitumen from the tar sands to Burrard Inlet. \nThis forum will feature a panel of arrestees\, including members of VanU\, who will tell us what they did and why. Come for inspiration as we discuss best options for moving forward and for a challenge to step up in community in defense of a more secure future. \nThe anthology\, Standing on High Ground: Civil Disobedience on Burnaby Mountain\, containing first hand accounts and court testimonies of 25 arrestees\, will be available for sale. \n  \nThis forum is sponsored by the Environment Team.

SUMMARY:Forum – Should we keep the Vancouver Park Board?
DESCRIPTION:The Vancouver Unitarians will host a one hour forum\, with questions welcomed\, on the future of the Vancouver Park Board with Parks chair Brennan Bastyovanszky\, at the Vancouver Unitarians Sanctuary.  The event will be also be  live-streamed on YouTube. \nLast December\, Mayor Sim announced his plan to dissolve the elected Vancouver Parks Board\, and a council majority endorsed it – with no public vote on the issue. Premier David Eby (whose B.C. government must approve the change) said he agreed in principle\, but would wait for the results of the Oct. 19 provincial election before deciding. \nThe forum will discuss if we need the elected Park Board. What are the pros and cons of this move? Should it go to a public vote first? You can send your questions for Brennan to forum organizer Stanley Tromp at stromp[at]telus[dot]net \nPlease return to this page on June 2 at 12:30 to watch the live stream.

Along with food\, you are encouraged to bring resources from your own spiritual practice to contribute to the session. \nThe workshop is capped at 15 people\, please RSVP below to reserve your spot. SUMMARY:Film screening and discussion: Love in the Time of Fentanyl
DESCRIPTION:The Social Justice Team and the IPA Team will be co-sponsoring the screening of the film Love in the Time of Fentanyl.  After viewing the film\, the audience is welcome to stay for a discussion.  Popcorn and snacks will be provided. \nFilm Synopsis:  As deaths in Vancouver\, Canada\, reach an all-time high\, the Overdose Prevention Society—a renegade supervised drug consumption site that employs active and former drug users—opens its doors. This intimate documentary looks beyond the stigma of drug use to show how the organization’s staff and volunteers do whatever it takes to save lives while giving hope to a marginalized community. \nColin Askey made this film “to upend the deeply entrenched beliefs about addiction\, counter the often dehumanizing stereotypes and misconceptions about drug users\, and create an empathetic portrait of an unconventional community of frontline workers who display incredible heroism and ingenuity in confronting this crisis.”

SUMMARY:Sunday Forum: What Do We Call Ourselves?
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, October 1\, 12:30p.m. there will be a forum in the Sanctuary with updates about the poll to rank the most popular alternative names. At the AGM on November 19\, you will be asked to vote your preference –  to keep our present legal name of The Unitarian Church of Vancouver or the most popular alternative name.  A vote of 75% will be required for a change. Otherwise we will keep our current name. \nBackground\nThe Canadian Unitarian Council (CUC) lists 41 member organizations: 14 Fellowships\, 12 Congregations\, 9 Churches\, 4 Unitarians*\, 1  Spiritual Centre\, 1 Other. \n*In 2004 the Board\, in consultation with members\, unanimously decided to reduce in prominence our official title of Church on the website\, logo and banner. The CUC website does not identify us by our legal name of Unitarian Church of Vancouver but by who we are –Vancouver Unitarians. CUC does the same for Kelowna Unitarians\, Saskatoon Unitarians\, and Calgary Unitarians. Their websites also downplay their legal name\, identifying as who they are. \nIs this a sufficient compromise for our members who want us to be identified as a religious community but not as a “church?”  And is this ok for members who want us to be known as a church? We need to continue this conversation. \nIf you have questions about this process\, please email the task force at wdwco[at]vancouverunitarians[dot]ca.
