DESCRIPTION:The Vancouver Unitarians will host a one hour forum\, with questions welcomed\, on the future of the Vancouver Park Board with Parks chair Brennan Bastyovanszky\, at the Vancouver Unitarians Sanctuary.  The event will be also be  live-streamed on YouTube. \nLast December\, Mayor Sim announced his plan to dissolve the elected Vancouver Parks Board\, and a council majority endorsed it – with no public vote on the issue. Premier David Eby (whose B.C. government must approve the change) said he agreed in principle\, but would wait for the results of the Oct. 19 provincial election before deciding. \nThe forum will discuss if we need the elected Park Board. What are the pros and cons of this move? Should it go to a public vote first? Anyone who is paying attention knows we are in a crisis; now more than ever\, we need to work together to develop the skills to handle crises effectively. \nWhat does being in a crisis do to our nervous systems? We are dysregulated. How do we heed that warning? How do we find our way back to a regulated state – so we can also lead others in doing the same? \nWe will start at 12:30 with a potluck lunch. DESCRIPTION:The Social Justice Team and the IPA Team will be co-sponsoring the screening of the film Love in the Time of Fentanyl.  After viewing the film\, the audience is welcome to stay for a discussion.  Popcorn and snacks will be provided. \nFilm Synopsis:  As deaths in Vancouver\, Canada\, reach an all-time high\, the Overdose Prevention Society—a renegade supervised drug consumption site that employs active and former drug users—opens its doors. This intimate documentary looks beyond the stigma of drug use to show how the organization’s staff and volunteers do whatever it takes to save lives while giving hope to a marginalized community. \nColin Askey made this film “to upend the deeply entrenched beliefs about addiction\, counter the often dehumanizing stereotypes and misconceptions about drug users\, and create an empathetic portrait of an unconventional community of frontline workers who display incredible heroism and ingenuity in confronting this crisis.”

SUMMARY:Sunday Forum: What Do We Call Ourselves?
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, October 1\, 12:30p.m. there will be a forum in the Sanctuary with updates about the poll to rank the most popular alternative names. At the AGM on November 19\, you will be asked to vote your preference –  to keep our present legal name of The Unitarian Church of Vancouver or the most popular alternative name.  A vote of 75% will be required for a change. Otherwise we will keep our current name. \nBackground\nThe Canadian Unitarian Council (CUC) lists 41 member organizations: 14 Fellowships\, 12 Congregations\, 9 Churches\, 4 Unitarians*\, 1  Spiritual Centre\, 1 Other. \n*In 2004 the Board\, in consultation with members\, unanimously decided to reduce in prominence our official title of Church on the website\, logo and banner. The CUC website does not identify us by our legal name of Unitarian Church of Vancouver but by who we are –Vancouver Unitarians. CUC does the same for Kelowna Unitarians\, Saskatoon Unitarians\, and Calgary Unitarians. Their websites also downplay their legal name\, identifying as who they are. \nIs this a sufficient compromise for our members who want us to be identified as a religious community but not as a “church?”  And is this ok for members who want us to be known as a church?
