DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our annual Cherry Blossom Potluck Picnic. We will meet in the Fireside Room to share a meal while watching beautiful cherry blossom scenes from Japan and Vancouver. There will  be an opportunity to write haikus. Here is a post about the creative haikus that were written last year. There is an International Haiku competition and everyone is welcome to enter. \nPlease bring your favourite food to share or sign up to help with the dishes. Please use this spreadsheet to enter your name. \nAfter a quick cleanup\, we will then venture out to view the cherry blossom trees along Fremlin Street and possibly Tisdale Park. DESCRIPTION:On March 15th\, 2026\, the Social Justice and Intercultural Teams will be jointly sponsoring a forum at 12:30 in the Fireside Room. The topic is: An introduction to Apartheid-Free Communities. An initiative of the American Friends Service Committee (Quakers)\, Apartheid-Free Communities is a global initiative for pro-humanity communities to take a stand against Apartheid in Palestine by taking a pledge online. \nThe UUA passed a resolution in 2024 encouraging American UU congregations to join the Apartheid-Free Communities campaign. Recently\, the Cities of Burnaby and Powell River took the pledge\, thereby declaring themselves the first two apartheid-free cities in Canada. Several United Churches in Vancouver have also taken the pledge. \nThe guest speakers are: Jeeda Musleh and Shirarose Wilensky. Jeeda is the lead organizer of Apartheid Free Communities\, Canada. Come take part as a proud sashayer\, strutting your stuff down the catwalk of Hewett Hall\, or as audience where you can ooh and ah\, giggle\, and applaud to your heart’s content\, or as a backstage helper to get the show ready! \nTake your choice of four themes: \n1) Cultural Pride where you wear something from YOUR cultural background \n2)  Urban Streetwear–strut down the catwalk in something cool or outrageous \n3)  Valentine’s Day-dress in red \n4) Year of the Horse\, dress in something associated with horses. Or Unicorns! \nA Pokemon Table  \nPotluck dinner \nAn Art Show tour \nThe  Intercultural Art Display Project will launch its first art show at Hewett Hall. DESCRIPTION:Event Location: Meet at noon at the NW corner of Main and Hasting (in front of OWL Drugs) \nYou are invited to join Vancouver Unitarians from the Intercultural and Social Justice teams to march together at the 35th annual Women’s Memorial March to honour the lives of the missing and murdered women and all gender-diverse peoples’ lives lost in the Downtown Eastside. \nFor more information before Feb 14\, send email to: lesliekemp76[at]gmail[dot]com. Please make cheques payable to the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre\, and include Feb 14 Women’s Memorial March on the memo line. All donations over $10 will be gratefully acknowledged with a tax-deductible receipt. \nThe march protocols are listed at the end of this post. March for the public starts at 12 pm from Carnegie (Main and Hastings) goes until about  3:30 pm. All are welcome as the march takes to the streets and proceeds through the Downtown Eastside. Many stops are made to commemorate where women were last seen or found. \nUnitarians will meet at the NW corner of Main St and Hastings at noon on Saturday\, Feb 14. We will not carry the Vancouver Unitarians sign. Photos of missing loved ones are welcome. The march is made possible by donations from individuals and organizations. The expenses will be about $10\,000 this year. \nLive streaming of the march will be available \nat https://www.facebook.com/groups/3241909016109819/ \nThe following text is taken from the Women’s Memorial March website: \nKNOW THE PROTOCOL: In a good way\, we want to inform everyone about the protocol for the march that has been in place for three decades: \nAt 10 am\, there will be a family and community remembrance at Main and Hastings. \nAt noon\, the elders and family members make a circle at Main and Hastings for the prayer circle and then the march proceeds. \nWomen elders carrying medicines are at the front\, followed by all women elders and family members and women drummers. The quilt made by loved ones in the DTES community is carried behind the family members and drummers.Everyone is invited to follow. We ask that you leave your organizational banners at home\, signs honouring women’s lives are welcome.The march makes a number of stops along the way for ceremony to honour where women were last seen or found. \nAt approximately 2 pm we stop again at Main and Hastings for speeches by community members\, followed by a healing circle and drummers at Oppenheimer Park around 3 pm\, and finally a community feast at the Japanese Language Hall from 4-5 pm \nCompelling documentary: Finding Dawn\nWhether or not you are able to attend the march\, please watch the compelling documentary\, Finding Dawn\, by acclaimed Métis filmmaker Christine Welsh.
