SUMMARY:Sunday Service: Personal Resiliency vs. Community Power
DESCRIPTION:Rev. Danielle Webber\nSo often in North American or Western Society we have an individualistic outlook on life: pull yourself up by your bootstraps\, climb the corporate ladder\, and achieve success. But what if the real secret behind resilience is not in breaking away from others\, but leaning on each other for strength. And how do we withdraw from society’s suggestions and create a more resilient world. \nRev. Danielle Webber is a white\, queer\, UU Minister who lives in Kelowna B.C. with their family. Danielle is a third-generation Unitarian Universalist\, who decided to follow her grandmother into ministry in 2012 while completing a Bachelor’s of Art in Psychology and Religious Studies. She graduated from Seminary in 2016\, and has worked with congregations in Calgary\, Toronto\, Montreal\, and now the interior of British Columbia. In addition to working as a congregational minister\, Rev. Danielle started working with the Canadian Unitarian Council in July of 2021\, as the Youth and Young Adult Ministry Specialist\, consulting with congregations\, long term strategic planning\, and consulting on Our Whole Lives curricula. \nDownload the Order of Service\n\nWeekly services\n\nJoin us in person in our Sanctuary or live online at https://ucv.im/live for our weekly Sunday Service\, beginning each week at 11am \n

SUMMARY:Sunday Service: Truth\, Courage and Solutions for the Climate Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Mary Bennett and Rosemary Cornell\nHow can you make a difference in changing the direction of climate change? What can Unitarians do–whether locally\, regionally or nationally? How can you talk about the climate crisis to people who seem uncommitted to change? These and other questions will be explored by Mary Bennett and Rosemary Cornell\, members of the UCV Environment Team. Mary and Rosemary are in a 10-session circle inspired by the work in “All We Can Save: Truth\, Courage and Solutions for the Climate Crisis. \nMary Bennett has been attending UCV since 1989 and was the Executive Director of the Canadian Unitarian Council from 2000-2008. She’s part of the Earth Spirituality Group at UCV and coordinates a Metro Vancouver Zero Waste book group where she first discovered the book All We Can Save. \nRosemary Cornell is a retired Biochemistry professor (SFU). She was drawn to the UCV community in late 2018 after meeting some inspiring Enviro-Team members at climate rallies and other front-line action\, such as resistance against TMX.  She is a member of the Environment\, Zero-waste\, and gardening teams. \nDownload the Order of Service\nWeekly services\n\nJoin us in person in our Sanctuary or live online at https://ucv.im/live for our weekly Sunday Service\, beginning each week at 11am

SUMMARY:Sunday Service: Do You Believe in Magic?
DESCRIPTION:Arran Morton\nThe Lovin’ Spoonful call us to\, “believe in the magic that can set you free”\, in this service we will explore how everyday magic can support us to create a world where we are all free. \nArran Morton currently lives in Victoria\, BC – though he is from Scotland and came to Victoria the ‘scenic route’. He loves to be near the ocean\, the trees\, and (Vancouver) island life generally. His work has focused on building community as well as training and facilitation on issues related to healthy relationships\, sexuality\, conflict resolution and restorative justice/practices. Arran was the Director of Spiritual Exploration at First Unitarian Church of Victoria until he adopted his daughter in 2021. He is currently the Minister at Comox Valley Unitarian Fellowship. \nDownload the Order of Service\n\nWeekly services\n\nJoin us in person in our Sanctuary or live online at https://ucv.im/live for our weekly Sunday Service\, beginning each week at 11am \nThis week’s land acknowledgment\nVery often when we listen to land acknowledgements in Vancouver\, we will hear words like “the Musqueam\, Squamish and Tsleil Waututh are the stewards of the land since time immemorial”. And it true\, but it kind of suggests that land stewardship is something in the past. \nBut its not. I wanted to share one contemporary example: the tidal marsh restoration project at New Brighton Park\, at the northeast corner of the city known now as Vancouver. A collaboration between the Musqueam\, Squamish\, Tsleil Waututh\, city of Vancouver and Port of Vancouver\, this project created 450m of shoreline and replanted a host of tidal plants to restore a small portion of the marshes lost during the colonization of Vancouver. Finished in 2017\, young salmon have been spotted on their migration to the ocean. \nLand stewardship is intimately connected with stewarding culture. The signs in New Brighton park provide us settlers with some insight on the relationship between land and culture. I want to read from one of the signs entitled “Interconnectedness” \nKnowledge and Territory: for our people\, plants and animals are much more than just resources. \nEach has its own constellation of knowledge\, including social cohesion\, land\, language\, technology\, and health. Each is connected – to harvest deer\, you need to make a bow\, which requires yew and materials to make carving tools. This stewardship is at its heart\, the stewardship of language\, knowledge\, and identity. \nAs we go forward into the next week\, perhaps see if you can find other examples of land and cultural stewardship near where you live and read what your host first nation says about it.

SUMMARY:Sunday Service: A Theology for Breaking Up
DESCRIPTION:Sunday Service July 30\nCasey Stainsby\nBreak ups can happen to us at any time in our lives and in so many different ways. There’s the classic romantic break up\, of course\, but we can also experience big shifts in our friendship and family relationships as well. Have you ever broken up with a whole community\, or a worldview? Changes such as these can bring a mix of pain and possibility\, and can often leave us feeling as though we are up the river without a map. In this service we’ll explore the spiritual practices and values that can support us through significant changes in relationships\, both personally and as Unitarian Universalists. \nCasey Stainsby (she/her) is an aspirant for Unitarian Universalist ministry\, studying part-time at the Vancouver School of Theology. She also serves the Canadian Unitarian Council as the Youth and Young Adult Program Manager. Casey is thrilled to have just moved back to Vancouver\, where she grew up\, after having lived in both Montreal and Victoria. \nDownload the Order of Service\n\nWeekly services\n\nJoin us in person in our Sanctuary or live online at https://ucv.im/live for our weekly Sunday Service\, beginning each week at 11am
