SUMMARY:Film: Myanmar – The Forgotten Revolution
DESCRIPTION:The IPA and Social Justice Teams and will be co-sponsoring the screening of the film MYANMAR The Forgotten Revolution (2022) Director Katie Arnold\, Journeyman Pictures. \n\nMyanmar may be the most violent among the 50 wars tracked globally with an estimated death toll of at least 50\,000 since the 2021 military coup\, including at least 8\,000 civilians.  The conflict has displaced approximately 2.3 million people\, according to the United Nations\, yet it has received relatively muted international attention compared to the crises in Ukraine and Gaza.\n\nThis rare film gives witness to  a forgotten revolution born out of decades of brutal oppression. After viewing the film\, the audience is welcome to stay for a discussion. Popcorn and snacks will be provided.

SUMMARY:Vancouver Unitarians Congregational Retreat
DESCRIPTION:The Board is inviting all members of Vancouver Unitarians to attend a congregational retreat on Saturday\, 9 March. We are very much looking forward to conferring with all of you on the strategic directions we\, as a congregation\, should pursue. Our theme is “Where are We Going?” \nAfter an opening song\, there will be icebreaker activities\, a presentation by the Board on our current state of affairs\, and then small group discussions.  The results of those discussions will be brought back to the whole group.  Then we will close the afternoon session with an outline of next steps as well as some announcements. \nThere will be a catered dinner starting at about 5:30 pm\, by donation. It will be followed at 6:15 pm by a coffee house organized by the youth – an opportunity to let our hair down and have some fun.  It would be great if everyone can stay for both the afternoon and evening\, but that may not be practical. Childcare is available upon request.  \nPlease RSVP below by Tuesday\, Mar. 5. This will greatly help us with organizing the sessions\, food\, and childcare for the day. We are looking forward to March 9 and hope you will be able to join us.

SUMMARY:Exploring the Intersections of Colonialism\, Racism\, and Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:This is a special event jointly sponsored by the Vancouver Unitarians’ IPA (IBPOC Plus Allies)\, Environment Team\, Refugee Team and Social Justice Team! \nWe will share an evening of dinner\, learning\, stories\, and possibly\, solutions. \nClick below to watch a video of the event: \n \n  \nWhen: Saturday January 20th 2024 5:30pm \nWhere: Hewett Hall 949 W 49th Ave\, Vancouver  \nPlease register below!  \nIn addition to the potluck dinner and hearing from guest IBPOC speakers\, there will be a photo exhibition called Dispossessed but Defiant.  \n* \nAbout the speakers  \nEsther Leung-Kong \nEsther is a Vancouver-based Chinese-Canadian Author who aims to educate children on diversity\, immigrant struggles\, and cultural representation. She is a mother of three\, she was born in Hong Kong and immigrated to Vancouver\, Canada (Coast Salish Territories) when she was 9 years old. \nEsther’s passion includes advocating for justice & compassion both locally and globally through her work at the non-profit organization Culture Regeneration Research Society and the local grassroots charity Vancouver Urban Ministries\, leadership development for young people\, and inspiring others through music. Throughout the years she has been raising awareness among the Chinese immigrant community about colonial history and treatment of Indigenous people. In 2022 she led a team to translate the “Truth and Reconciliation 94 Calls to Action” into Chinese.  \nShe is the author of the children’s bilingual book “Wonderfully Made 奇妙的傑作”.  \n  \nSevern Cullis-Suzuki \nSevern has been an activist for intergenerational justice – justice for future generations–her whole life.  Deeply concerned about the environment as a child\, she started the Environmental Children’s Organization with friends in grade five\, which culminated a few years later in a speech to the UN Earth Summit in 1992 at age 12.  The speech is still making the rounds as “the girl who silenced the world for 5 minutes.” \nToday Severn’s focus is the nexus of decline in diversity of biodiversity\, worldviews\, economies\, language\, traditional knowledge and identity.  She holds an M.Sc. in Ethnoecology from the University of Victoria\, and is currently a Vanier and Public scholar PhD candidate studying endangered language revitalization.  Severn is now executive director of the David Suzuki Foundation and\, with her husband Judson Brown and their two sons\, shares her  time between Vancouver and  Haida Gwaii\, off the coast of British Columbia. \nFor Severn’s full bio to see what she was up to between 12 years old and now\, check out https://severncullissuzuki.com/ \n  \nKwiis Hamilton \nKwiis Hamilton is Nuu Chah Nulth (Opechesaht) and Sto:lo (Lequamel). His parents are Kwitsel Tatel (Patricia Kelly) and Haa’yuups (Ron Hamilton). He practices jewelry making\, painting\, printmaking\, spoken word poetry\, wood carving\, singing\, dancing\, and storytelling. Through the creation of well-made objects Kwiis expresses his values and tells modern and traditional stories. His work sheds light on the obsolete systems of domination and exploitation upon which the foundation of the colonial project of canada is built. He hopes to inspire critical thinking and radical expressions of a healthy\, educated\, safe\, and joy filled community\, as well as a shared sense of belonging rooted in self location and a strong spiritual identity. \n  \nKyi Min Saw \nMy family emigrated to Singapore from Burma when I was five years old. After graduating grade 12\, we moved again to Vancouver where I attended UBC and became a lab technologist. I was a member of a group of Burma human rights activists called the Burma Roundtable (1999 to 2009). I later joined a charity founded by Rod Germine called Just Aid Foundation (2001 to 2011). JAF fundraised to support the Mae Tao Clinic\, a hospital and medical school that provides essential healthcare to refugees on the Thai-Burma border. JAF also supported Assistance Association for Political Prisoners\, an organization within Burma that advocates for the release of prisoners of conscience held by the junta. \n* \n(Image credit:  Leonardo Basso / unsplash)

SUMMARY:Write for Rights
DESCRIPTION:This Sunday\, Dec 10th\, marks the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). Canadian legal scholar John Peters Humphrey was the principal author of the first draft of the UDHR. The Social Justice Team will host our 7th annual Amnesty International Write for Rights event in the Fireside Room from 12:30-1:30 p.m.  Snacks will be available. \nAmnesty International (AI) has offices around the world and they are constantly hearing about human rights violations.  Each year\, AI selects 10 cases that they believe are most likely to be influenced by public exposure. Rev. Fulgence Ndagijimana\, well known to the UCV community\, credits an international letter writing campaign with his release from jail after he was arrested and imprisoned in 2015. \nPlease stop by to write a letter.  You choose the case(s) which interests you the most. \nThis year’s cases from Canada\, the U.S.\, and Australia include: 1) The Wet’suwet’en People who are surveilled\, harassed\, and criminalized for protecting their lands and water from the Coastal Gaslink pipeline\, 2) Rocky Myers who has been on death row in Alabama for 30 years with flawed prosecution\, 3) Maung Sawyeddollah who is taking on Facebook for its role in Myanmar atrocities\, and 4)Indigenous activists who are fighting to save their ancestral lands\, the Torres Strait Islands.  There are additional cases from Brazil\, South Africa\, Eswatini\, Poland\, Kyrgyzstan\, Tunisia and the United Arab Emirates. \nBackground material and sample letters will be available for 10 cases.  Paper\, pens and envelopes will be provided. We will affix postage and mail your letters.

SUMMARY:Celebrating Our Story
DESCRIPTION:Every year thousands of people traverse the courtyard of the UCV campus between the Sanctuary\, Hewett Hall and the administration buildings. Many do not know the story of how this beautiful campus came to be. It’s important that our story is known. \nOn Sunday\, November 5th at 12:15 following the service there will be a short dedication in the courtyard of a plaque that sets out the original vision of those involved; Rev Phillip Hewett and Wolfgang Gerson (architect). A quote by Rev. Steven Epperson reinforces how the vision has been sustained since 1964. \nJoin Rev. Shawn Gautier\, President Mairy Beam\, Erika and Kate Gerson\, Rev. Epperson and others in celebrating this occasion. \n

SUMMARY:Earth Spirit: Samhain Ritual at UCV
DESCRIPTION:The UCV Earth Spirit group will hold a ritual in celebration of Samhain. Samhain marks the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter or the “darker half” of the year. It is a time when the veil between the worlds of the living and the dead is the thinnest\, allowing the ancestors to walk among the living. This is the time to honour and remember our ancestors.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere will be time for crafts and “Cakes & Ale” (potluck snacks and drinks) to follow.\n\n\n\nAll are welcome. Please register here so we have an idea of numbers.

SUMMARY:Lunch fundraiser sponsored by the Partner Church committee
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fundraising lunch sponsored by the Partner Church committee on Sunday\, Oct. 29 at Noon in Hewett Centre. \nOur donations over the last three years have allowed our partner congregation in Rutana\, Burundi to complete most of the building of their new church so that it now usable and services can begin. This year’s donations provided funds to install windows\, flooring and a bathroom. As they have no urgent need for immediate funding and because they are currently going through a transition in leadership\, the Partner Church team has decided to donate profits from this Sunday’s lunch to an urgent need of our own – the reconstruction of the portico between Hewett Centre and the Sanctuary.

SUMMARY:In-person Listening Circle on the Middle East
DESCRIPTION:In light of the heart-breaking violence in the Middle East\, Rev. Shawn and the Healthy Relations Team will be offering two opportunities for us to come together next week to share what is on our hearts as the conflict continues to unfold. \nThese gatherings won’t be a debate over who is right and who is wrong\, but simply a space for each person to give voice to their feelings and to have those feelings held in community. \nRev. Shawn and members of the HRT will host an in-person listening circle in the Fireside Room on Wednesday\, October 25th\, at 7:00pm. \nCatherine Strickland\, a member of the HRT\, will also host an online listening circle at 7:00 pm on Thursday\, October 26th. SUMMARY:You're invited to the Vancouver Art Gallery with our IPA Team
DESCRIPTION:IPA invites members of the congregation to join us on a visit to Conceptions of White at the Vancouver Art Gallery. \nThis highly thought-provoking show examines the visual legacy of racism and colonialism\, illustrating how conceptions of a “White race” emerged in visual representations and have historically distorted perceptions of the inherent worth and dignity of our fellow human beings\, as well as how artists are unsettling those stereotypes today.  Gerta Moray will facilitate discussion during and after the visit. \nMeet us at the VAG on the 3rd floor at 10:30 am. At 12:00 pm we will adjourn for discussion\, coffee\, and refreshment at the VAG Bistro. \nIf you are interested and cannot come on Oct 25\, there can be second group visit on Friday November 3. (Admission is pay what you can after 4:00 but you must book a free admission ticket online if you are not a VAG member). Gerta can be available for discussion at the gallery from 6:45-8:00pm. \n  \n*Image from VanArtGallery.bc.ca: Deanna Bowen\, White Man’s Burden\, 2022 (installation at MacKenzie Art Gallery\, 2022)\, giclée prints on paper and selected works from the MacKenzie Art Gallery permanent collection\, Collection of the MacKenzie Art Gallery\, Gift of the Artist\, Photo: Carey Shaw.

SUMMARY:No Place for Hate: Counter Protest to anti-trans demonstrations
DESCRIPTION:Meet at Noon\, Wednesday at the Art Gallery steps and wear pink\, blue\, and white\, in any combination! \nJoin Rev. Shawn and Kiersten Moore on September 20th\, 12 pm\, at the Vancouver Art Gallery to stand in solidarity with trans and non-binary people against protests planned demanding the role-back of trans rights and inclusion in our schools. \nWe do not know what to expect with these protests or how many people will turn out for the two conflicting protests advertised. The “Family Freedom” organisers are urging kids to walk out of school in protest of SOGI policies\, we therefore encourage our own kids to stay in school in support of SOGI. \nAdult Allies who can make it\, please come show that there is NO place for hate in our city. \nClick here some good resources as well as a list of counter-demonstrations across B.C.
