DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an engaging presentation by Palestinian Chef Izzeldin Bukhari of Sacred Cuisine from East Jerusalem. \nHe will talk to us about Palestinian food\, with a special focus on vegetarian and vegan dishes from the Somi tradition. Izzeldin is a Sufi Muslim\, with deep roots in Gaza where he used to go as a child to visit his Grandmother\, and much of his cooking derives from Gazaan food traditions. \nIzzeldin is also an ardent environmentalist because of his interest in what goes into growing and nourishing the food that then feeds our bodies and souls. \nThis forum is sponsored by the Social Justice Team.  \nSnacks brought by SJ Team members will be served. DESCRIPTION:The VanU Fourth Sunday Book Club will meet on May 24 at 12:30 in the Family room in the Administrative building and online at vanu.ca/fourth-sunday-books to discuss “War Resisters\, Standing Against the Vietnam War\,” by Joline Martin. This book offers a contemporary perspective on the struggles and triumphs of the American Vietnam War resisters who resettled in Canada on Vancouver Island. Through interviews with resisters\, author Joline Martin shares previously untold stories about what it was like for them to start new lives on Vancouver Island all the while grappling with the consequences of their decisions to stand against the war. The resisters’ stories blend with historical context to offer a deep and alternate insight into a time of political unrest in the United States. These stories challenge the long-held myths and assumptions about what it meant to be a Vietnam War resister.\n\nWe have arranged for a war resister who came to Canada during the late 1960s from the U.S. to attend this meeting. We look forward to hearing an account of his journey to BC and involvement with Vancouver Unitarians at that time. We are also hoping find and invite someone in our congregation to give an account of what was involved in organizing and providing support and assistance to that wave of immigrants through the Unitarian Church of Vancouver.\n\n\nEveryone is welcome. This is a place to build friendships and self-identity in an actively anti-oppressive setting.
