SUMMARY:Night for All Souls at Mountain View Cemetary
DESCRIPTION:Join Kiersten Moore and Casey Stainsby this Thursday at the Opening Ceremony for All Souls at Mountain View Cemetery. We will meet near the entrance at 5:45 pm to make it to the ceremony site for 6pm. This event has been held annually since 2005; It is personal and non-denominational\, with an artistic and communal atmosphere that speaks to our Unitarian Universalist principles. \nAll Souls at Mountain View Cemetery is an artist led annual event to honour our dead. It was conceived by artists Paula Jardine & Marina Szijarto. Over the years\, they have been joined by others who have shared their love and regard for their dead. \n“In many cultures around the world\, the days at the end of October and beginning of November are considered an important time for honouring the dead in our lives. In our modern\, urban\, and relatively transient culture\, traditional “village” customs have been left behind\, though not the human impulses that led to these traditions.” \nHeld during the last days of October\, people are invited to light candles\, write messages\, and leave personal memorials to remember their dead in an atmosphere of contemplative beauty. Often there is live music\, and small fires to gather around. \nVisit the All Souls at Moutain View website for more information and a list of all the events. \n

SUMMARY:Second Sunday Book Group - Fire Weather by John Vaillant
DESCRIPTION:The VanU Second Sunday Book Group will meet on Sunday October 13\, 12:30 p.m. at Biddle and online at this link to discuss Fire Weather by John Vaillant. \nJohn Vaillant is a stellar Vancouver author. His books read like gripping novels but are based in reality and well-researched facts. This non-fiction book sets the scene for the unimaginable firestorm that engulfed the city of Fort McMurray Alberta in May\, 2016. He digs deep into the history of the boreal forest\, the tar sands\, the oil industry\, the city\, fire itself and the dreadful beast that was created by one small spark. Deeply disturbing and enlightening. \nEveryone who has read or is interested in hearing about this book is welcome. \nThe Vancouver Unitarians’ Second Sunday Book Group meets after the Sunday service on the second Sunday of each month (except July and August). We meet at 12:30 pm in the Biddle room and online (by request – please contact rdainow[at]gmail.com if interested in attending online). Everyone is welcome. \nIf attending online\, please click on blue JOIN MEETING button below.
