SUMMARY:Listening Circle on the State of the World
DESCRIPTION:Led by Rev. Shawn Gauthier\nWe live in both beautiful and bewildering times\, and many of us feel the need to come together to try to make sense of it all. \nAfter this Sunday’s service there will be a lunch in Hewett Hall\, so please join us after that at 12:45pm in the Sanctuary when the Healthy Relations Team will facilitate a listening circle. We can talk about the complex feelings we’re carrying about global conflicts\, climate change\, and the state of democracy in the world. \nWhile there will be space to share what’s weighing on our hearts\, there will also be an invitation to look for hope and the seeds of resilience. All are welcome. \nIf you are unable to join in person and feel you would benefit from joining a listening circle online\, please let us know at healthyrelations [@] vanu.ca.

SUMMARY:Circle Dance: The Very Merry Month of May
DESCRIPTION:Come Join us for Circle Dance. All dances taught. New dancers welcome! \nThere are many sayings we are familiar with about May: “April showers bring May flowers” is one that comes to mind. A quote from Edwin Way Tale is:  “The world’s favorite season is the spring. All things seem possible in May.”  \nThis quote fits some of the themes we’ll explore on May 6th: nature\, spring and possibilities\, including the struggle for justice for workers and for peace.  \nMay Day (May 1st) is International Workers Day). Workers started organizing globally in order to secure peace. From the outset\, May 1 was a day of international mass struggle for the eight-hour work day and universal suffrage\, as well as for world peace and socialism. \nContact Leslie Kemp or Mairy Beam [mairyelesbea[at]gmail.com] for more info. \nCircle Dance is part of Vancouver Unitarians’ Spirituality and Practice\, click here to see similar events \n

SUMMARY:Sunday Service: Asian Connections – Part 1: Unitarians & India
DESCRIPTION:Rev. Shawn Gauthier & Gerta Moray\nWe celebrate Asian Heritage Month with a series of three services focussed on the many connections between Unitarianism/Unitarian Universalism and various Asian religions. Rev. Shawn and a small group of VanU members have spent the past year exploring our fascinating but sometimes neglected history to better understand how our faith today has been shaped through encounters with Asian cultures. This Sunday’s service will focus on the connections we have with Indian cultures and religions. \nDownload the Order of Service\nFurther Reading\n— \nWeekly services\n\nWe gather every Sunday morning at 11am in our Sanctuary at 49th and Oak and online at vanu.ca/live. Worship creates connections within\, among\, and beyond us\, calling us to our better selves\, calling us to live with wisdom and compassion. \n\nAfter service\, we gather in Hewett Centre for Coffee and Social Hour. SUMMARY:Where Olive Trees Weep Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:The Social Justice Team is hosting this screening for a maximum of 40 people.   Please reserve your free ticket here.   Click here to watch trailer. \nAbout the Film:\nWhere Olive Trees Weep offers a searing window into the struggles and resilience of the Palestinian people under Israeli occupation. It explores themes of loss\, trauma\, and the quest for justice. We follow\, among others\, Palestinian journalist and therapist Ashira Darwish\, grassroots activist Ahed Tamimi\, and Israeli journalist Amira Hass. We witness Dr. Gabor Maté offering trauma-healing work for a group of women who have been tortured in Israeli prisons. Ancient landscapes bear deep scars\, having witnessed the brutal reality of ancestral land confiscation\, expulsions\, imprisonment\, home demolitions\, water deprivation\, and denial of basic human rights. Yet\, through the veil of oppression\, we catch a glimpse of resilience—deep roots that have carried the Palestinian people through decades of darkness and shattered lives. This emotional journey bares the humanity of the oppressed while grappling with the question: what makes the oppressor so ruthlessly blind to its own cruelty?

SUMMARY:Sunday Service: Asian Connections – Part 2: Japan/Buddhism
DESCRIPTION:Mei Jia Lam\, Hisako Masaki and Rev. Shawn Gauthier\nWe continue our celebration of Asian Heritage Month with the second of three services focused on the many connections between Unitarianism/Unitarian Universalism and various Asian religions. \nRev. Shawn and a small group of VanU members have been exploring our fascinating but sometimes neglected history to better understand how our tradition today has been shaped through ongoing encounters with Asian cultures. \nThis Sunday\, we will focus on our connections with Buddhism\, particularly in the Japanese context. We’ll explore how the exchange of ideas over the past 150 years has left a Unitarian legacy in Japan and how Zen Buddhism has found expression in modern Unitarian Universalism. \nDownload the Order of Service\nRelated Reading\n— \nWeekly services\n\nWe gather every Sunday morning at 11am in our Sanctuary at 49th and Oak and online at vanu.ca/live. Worship creates connections within\, among\, and beyond us\, calling us to our better selves\, calling us to live with wisdom and compassion. \n\nAfter service\, we gather in Hewett Centre for Coffee and Social Hour. Families with children and newcomers are always welcome!
