SUMMARY:'We Are The Great Turning' Sunday podcast discussion group
DESCRIPTION:A young activist\, Jess Serrante\, has created a 10-part podcast entitled ‘We Are The Great Turning‘ with the revered 95 year-old activist\, Joanna Macy. She approached Joanna about sharing her work in this way\, and Joanna agreed\, being aware of her limited time left on this earth\, and her awareness of how important it is to get The Work That Reconnects out into the world in these deeply troubled times. She recommends strongly that this work be done in community. \nJess and Joanna are imagining us all there with them sitting at Joanna’s kitchen table. Hearing Joanna’s voice as she shares her deep\, expansive wisdom is deeply moving and her process is very helpful in processing the fear and grief many of us are experiencing\, so that it can move us to action in a challenge mindset rather than reactivity or shutdown in fear and grief. The podcast includes much more than just words\, but includes the experiential elements as are shared in the 2 day retreat. Join me in Biddle at 12:30 every first Sunday. Feel welcome to chat with me around the Vanu campus or email me if you would like to attend at healthyrelations@vanu.ca \nYou can listen to a teaser of the podcast here: We Are The Great Turning Podcast Teaser. – Cindy Cashin

SUMMARY:Matters of Life and Death
DESCRIPTION:Approaching End of Life\, Starting Today: What Do I Get to Choose? \nFor the next in our series of programs on aging and the end-of-life\, Rev. Shawn will host a conversation between Jane Slemon and Michael O’Neil\, who will share their medical expertise and experience around the options and decisions available to us as we near life’s end. These life-giving lessons can be relevant to us all\, even if death is nowhere on the horizon. The session will take place on December 1st at 12:45pm\, in the Fireside Room. All are welcome and encouraged to RSVP here. \nJane Slemon (RN\, MA in English) is recently retired from her role as Director of Care at a hospice and has a background in critical care nursing and in teaching English and Science at Emily Carr. She is a folk musician playing in various bands for concerts and dances. Michael (BA\, MD\, CCFP-EM\, FCFP\, Clinical Asst. Prof. UBC ) is a mostly retired physician teaching at UBC medical school and assisting at surgeries. He has worked for 50 years\, first as a Family doctor\, then as an ER doc\, palliative care doctor\, and then as a Hospitalist. He has had many discussions about illness and end of life care.

SUMMARY:Welcome Yule - Chalice Choir presents their Advent Concert
DESCRIPTION:Wolcum Yole! Welcome Yule!\nClick here for tickets \nCombining the traditions of the pagan Yuletide with the medieval texts of Advent\, the Vancouver Unitarians’ Chalice Choir presents their Advent Concert: Benjamin Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols! \nAs Benjamin Britten set back to England from the USA during WWII\, he stopped off in Halifax\, Nova Scotia\, where he picked up a book of ancient manuscripts over 600 years old. On his voyage\, instead of being terrified of torpedo attacks\, he worked through his complicated relationship with these religious texts to create a brilliant musical setting celebrating the end of the darkness and welcoming back the journey to the light! \nThis “YOLE” afternoon concert\, featuring an afternoon of lovely music written between 1624 to 2024 will feature our returning tenor Lead\, Lyndon Ladeur\, Harpist\, Miya Otake\, our wonderful accompanist\, Elliott Dainow and conductor\, David Buchan. Come celebrate this afternoon of beautiful music with us! \n\nDate: Dec 1\, 2024 (Sunday)\nTime: 2:30pm\nPlace: Vancouver Unitarians\, Oak & 49th\nCost: $20 (‘what you can afford’ tickets are available at the ticket desk on the night)\n\nTickets\nPlease buy your tickets using the GET TICKETS button below. You will receive an email with your ticket(s). On the day of the concert\, please show us your QR codes at the door.

SUMMARY:Sunday Service: There's Something About Mary
DESCRIPTION:Rev. Shawn Gauthier and Vivian Davidson\nShe is known as the mother of Jesus—or even the Mother of God. By many\, she’s called the Queen of the World and the Queen of Heaven. She’s often portrayed as a serene and silent figure\, but she’s also been frequently depicted as crowned in glory and sitting on a throne. She is both a simple peasant girl and a manifestation of the feminine divine\, at once\, relatable and remote. Her image is instantly recognizable\, and yet she feels mysterious and maybe even confusing. This Sunday\, Vivian and Shawn will explore the enduring and complex meanings of Mary.\nDownload the Order of Service\nRelated Reading\n— \nWeekly services\n\nJoin us in person in our Sanctuary or watch the service live on this page\, beginning each Sunday just before 11 am. \nYou can also catch the current service stream anytime at vanu.ca/live
