SUMMARY:Exploration Sunday: Seeking Wisdom
DESCRIPTION:In March\, many of our small groups will be discussing this month’s theme: Seeking Wisdom. We’ll launch this theme with an all-ages service focusing on wisdom derived from spiritual elders and exploring the sources that we each draw on for wisdom. \nThere will be a light lunch after the service followed by our Exploration Groups (choose your interest) 12:30-1:45 pm: \n\nPaganism 101: This adult education course\, offered bi-annually at Vancouver Unitarians\, focuses on paganism that is compatible with and complementary to modern Unitarian rationality. Today’s session is a teaser for the upcoming fall course. Led by Louise Bunn in Lindsay-Priestly.\nListening Circle: The Healthy Relations Team invites you to join a listening circle to share your reflections on how the wisdom of elders or other sources might provide solace in this time of chaos and confusion. Fireside Room\nWisdom of our Bodies: Come and join Ariel for some active games. All ages welcome. Outside\, weather permitting. Meet in the alcove.

SUMMARY:Circle Dance: Celebrating the Wisdom of Women and the Earth
DESCRIPTION:We are on the verge of International Working Women’s Day (March 8) and just a few weeks from the Spring Equinox. Marg Piercy’s poem\, A Strong Woman evokes the ways women are strong: “A strong woman is a woman determined to do something others are determined not be done…” \n“Strong is what we make\neach other. Until we are all strong together\,\na strong woman is a woman strongly afraid.” \nThe Spring Equinox evokes the resilience of life\, the determination to grow from seedlings to fruit. \nWe will share dances that bring awareness of the strength\, resilience and wisdom of women and the earth. Women like Boudica/ Boadicea\, a symbol of the struggle for justice and independence in Britain during the Roman Empire or Julien of Norwich\, who assured those who came to see her that “all will be well\,” during the black death in the middle ages.  In more recent times\, Joanna Macy shared the Elm Dance to help heal the collective trauma of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. We will share these dances as well as others that are about survival\, resilience and the hope of renewal that spring offers. \nAll are welcome to join this circle — whether you are new to circle dance or experienced. All dances will be taught.

SUMMARY:Breaking Bread: Family Centred Community Dinners
DESCRIPTION:Gather round for Vancouver Unitarians monthly Breaking Bread potluck! It’s a time each month when we circle back\, to be community together in a family-centred dinner for all ages (think of the broadest definition of family and you’ll find that you’re invited!). In a community as large as ours\, it’s easy to find our connections revolving around a small group without many chances to meet newcomers; it’s just as easy for newcomers to find themselves orbiting on the periphery of the congregation\, not sure how to connect with existing members. Breaking Bread is a chance to make those connections\, while celebrating the cycles of our lives and the wheel of the year. \nWith this month’s gathering landing on Pi Day (March 14th – 3.14)\, we’re celebrating all things pie/pi related! Vancouver Unitarians’ Men’s Group is hosting and will provide a few main dishes\, and you’re invited to please bring something to share if you are able. Maybe chicken pot pie\, or hand pies\, or shepherds’ pie\, or apple pie\, or pecan pie\, or cottage pie\, or shoofly pie\, frito pie\, or pizza pie! The possibilities of pie are truly endless! \nIn addition to the tasty meal\, we’ll have activities exploring circular symbols in spiritual traditions\, mathemagic tricks\, food/math trivia\, and much more! \nPlease RSVP below to let us know that you’re coming and how many friends you’re bringing!

SUMMARY:Katherine Roback - Celebration of Life
DESCRIPTION:A Celebration of Katherine’s life will be held at 11 am on March 20\, 2026\nVancouver Unitarians\n949 W 49th Ave\, Vancouver\, BC V5Z 2T1 \nDownload the Order of Service\nA reception will follow\nThis event will be livestreamed – please see below – please refresh if you don’t see it\n—\nKATHERINE RUTH ROBACK\nFebruary 14\, 1945 – January 31\, 2026\nKatherine Roback was born and raised in Montreal\, the eldest of three children born to Leo and Jeannette Roback (née Wales). She grew up with the strong values of her secular Jewish/Protestant socialist family and community. Degrees in anthropology from McGill University and University of Kansas\, coupled with thesis fieldwork in Jamaica\, led to her lifelong interest in non-institutionalized religions. \nIn 1968\, Katherine moved to British Columbia to pursue work in urban anthropology. She soon formed personal connections with the Lil’wat people in Mount Currie\, 160 km north of Vancouver. She lived in the vicinity for five years with her then-partner Phil Sam\, and she remained connected to the Sam family for life\, from whom she learned of the spirituality of giving and receiving. \nThe greatest gift in Katherine’s life was her daughter\, Lorien Sam Roback Maté. Katherine raised her daughter in Vancouver in a shared living arrangement with Aleksa Dorsey and her child Sean. Their blended family provided support\, stability\, and a safe and caring home life for all. Katherine’s life continued to grow after Lorien’s marriage to Gunther Maté\, the births of their beautiful children Sophia and Philip\, and the family’s moves to Europe and Asia. The relationship between Katherine and Lorien nurtured them both. In 1996 Katherine brought her mother Jeannette to Vancouver where she was her devoted companion and caregiver until Jeannette’s death in 1999. \nKatherine devoted her life to serving community. She worked as coordinator of the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre\, developed a training program for Indigenous family support workers\, and counselled women on their healing journeys from chemical dependency and abuse. In her later life\, as a spiritual director\, she provided counselling services to private clients. Through organizations such as Sacred Web\, Oak Counselling Services\, Unitarians\, and Unison\, Katherine fostered belonging and creativity to create a place where people were accepted and supported. As a Unitarian lay chaplain\, Katherine was honoured to marry couples and to serve bereaved families. \nIn midlife\, Katherine’s spirit awoke\, and she discovered that she was lesbian. New worlds opened to her – love\, sensuousness\, and spirituality\, some hard lessons and many great gifts. She embraced the Unitarian community\, and she lent her voice to choral singing. With her grandmother’s cello\, Katherine’s music-making in Ambleside Orchestra and a quartet of musical friends stretched and enriched her. \nAs a teacher\, counsellor\, singer\, worship coordinator\, and facilitator\, she worked to empower families and communities. To live with integrity each day\, to live the strong values she was raised with\, to be authentic to herself and others\, and to receive and give love unconditionally – these became her watchwords. \nKatherine took in the world through her senses. Among her loves were her dear friend Marylke Nieuwenhuis\, her family and friends\, the peaceful energy of water\, solitude and adventure\, singing\, music-making\, and story-writing. She will be remembered for her loyal and steadfast friendships\, her bright smile\, her intrinsic optimism and faith in humanity\, and her trust in the process of positive change and healing. \nKatherine died of cancer on January 31\, 2026. She was predeceased by her son-in-law Gunther Maté in 2023. She leaves her daughter Lorien Maté and grandchildren Sophia and Philip; her brother David and partner Kathleen Flanagan and their children Jonah and Halley; her sister Frances and partner Steve White; and many dear cousins and friends. \nIf friends and family wish\, a memorial donation to Doctors Without Borders would be deeply appreciated.

SUMMARY:Meditation and Chi Gong
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday mornings\, we have two offerings in our Meditation Room. \nFirst\, there is Chi Gong from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. This practice is Chanting to clear organs and/or Chanting to clear chakras as originally taught by Dr. Steven Aung. Facilitated by Victoria Oginski. \nYou are also welcome to join us from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. for silent meditation. \nFor the past nine years\, the group has been led by Victoria Oginski\, who has been a dedicated meditator for over 45 years. She is a Buddhist and has studied with many extraordinary Buddhist masters over the years in Canada\, Nepal\, India\, and Tibet. Although informed by Buddhist principles\, the facilitation is more universal in approach and everyone is welcome. \nThere is no formal fee\, but please consider dana (donation) to VanU or the Refugee Committee.

SUMMARY:Sunday Service: Is There Meaning in Suffering?
DESCRIPTION:Rev. Shawn Gauthier\nSometimes\, while trying to be helpful\, people say the darndest—and most damaging—things in the wake of loss or human suffering. These are typically attempts to make sense of what has happened\, to find some deeper meaning amid the heartache we feel. But\, it’s worth asking: Is there meaning to be found in suffering? \nDownload the Order of Service\nRelated Reading\nSermon text\nWeekly services\n\nWe gather every Sunday morning at 11am in our Sanctuary at 49th and Oak and online at vanu.ca/live. Worship creates connections within\, among\, and beyond us\, calling us to our better selves\, calling us to live with wisdom and compassion. \n\nAfter service\, we gather in Hewett Centre for Coffee and Social Hour. Families with children and newcomers are always welcome!
