SUMMARY:Circle Dance: Red Dress Day and more!
DESCRIPTION:May 5 is known as Red Dress Day in Canada. Red Dress Day honours the thousands of missing and murdered Indigenous women\, girls\, 2-spirit and gender diverse people in Canada. We will dance in solidarity with the families and communities that are working for justice\, healing and change. \nIn Mexican culture\, May 5th is Cinco de Mayo\, Battle of Puebla Day\, and so we celebrate this as well as the May 1st Celtic festival known as May Day and International Workers Day\, which originated in the late 19th century to commemorate the fight for an 8-hour day. While many workers have benefited from this historic victory\, many groups of workers still work long hours to feed their children and pay the rent. \nWe will weave these diverse threads in our dances on May 5th. Please join us in solidarity\, community and in celebration.  And don’t hesitate to wear red! \nThis is a welcoming circle for new and experienced dancers alike. All dances will be taught.

SUMMARY:Talking Climate: How to have Conversations that Connect
DESCRIPTION:The single strongest predictor of climate action is whether people talk about it. But how to do that in these times of intersecting poly-crisis\, where mention of climate change is made to feel taboo\, socially? \nKaren Crosby of Regenerate BC will facilitate an interactive workshop on strategies and best practices to empower you to use your best voice in communicating solutions to what we all fundamentally care about. The workshop will focus (not exclusively) on solutions related to transportation.

SUMMARY:Fourth Sunday Book Club: "War Resisters\, Standing Against the Vietnam War"
DESCRIPTION:The VanU Fourth Sunday Book Club will meet on May 24 at 12:30 in the Family room in the Administrative building and online at vanu.ca/fourth-sunday-books to discuss “War Resisters\, Standing Against the Vietnam War\,” by Joline Martin. This book offers a contemporary perspective on the struggles and triumphs of the American Vietnam War resisters who resettled in Canada on Vancouver Island. Through interviews with resisters\, author Joline Martin shares previously untold stories about what it was like for them to start new lives on Vancouver Island all the while grappling with the consequences of their decisions to stand against the war. The resisters’ stories blend with historical context to offer a deep and alternate insight into a time of political unrest in the United States. These stories challenge the long-held myths and assumptions about what it meant to be a Vietnam War resister.\n\nWe have arranged for a war resister who came to Canada during the late 1960s from the U.S. to attend this meeting. We look forward to hearing an account of his journey to BC and involvement with Vancouver Unitarians at that time. We are also hoping find and invite someone in our congregation to give an account of what was involved in organizing and providing support and assistance to that wave of immigrants through the Unitarian Church of Vancouver.\n\n\nEveryone is welcome. If you plan to attend online\, please advise Rob Dainow at rdainow[at]gmail.com by May 23 at the latest. \n\nIf attending online\, please come back to this page at the time of the event\, and you will see a JOIN MEETING button below.
