DESCRIPTION:Day one of a two-day retreat with Heather Talbot and Olive Dempsey \nHow to live with the enormity and urgency of today’s intertwined crises?  \nThrough experiential practices of reflection and ritual\, we will open to the grief we carry for our planetary home\, deepen our gratitude and respect for the gifts of life\, explore ways of knowing\, and renew our connections to ourselves\, each other and all of life. Together\, we will cultivate courage and resilience for facing this moment with clarity and purpose\, and we will strengthen our commitments to bringing our unique gifts more fully into the service of life. \nThe Work that Reconnects (WTR) is an interactive and evolving group process\, first developed by Joanna Macy\, in cooperation with many colleagues\, over several decades. The WTR draws on a range of foundational teachings\, including systems thinking\, deep ecology and deep time practices\, along with wisdom traditions and a commitment to undoing oppression. \nAbout the facilitators: \nHeather and Olive have been students and facilitators of the Work that Reconnects framework for more than 15 years. Together\, they bring decades of experience in justice-oriented group process facilitation and therapeutic practice\, which they integrate into the containers they create to support meaningful and connected participant experiences. All are welcome to attend! \nThe forum will be held Wednesday\, Sept. 25th at 7 p.m. in the Sanctuary building at 949 W. 49th Ave. The forum will also be available to view by livestream on this web page. \nConfirmed candidates: \n\nChristine Boyle\, New Democratic Party\nJohn Coupar\, Conservative Party of BC\nWendy Hayko\, Green Party of BC\n\nAs a community-minded organization\, the Vancouver Unitarians have hosted many previous all-candidates forums during past municipal\, provincial\, and federal elections. With a B.C. provincial election scheduled for Oct. 19th\, all candidates in the Vancouver – Little Mountain riding have been invited to participate. \nThe venue is at the northeast corner of 49th Avenue and Oak Street and can be reached by public transit on the #17 or #49 bus routes. SUMMARY:Water Ceremony Empty Cups
DESCRIPTION:As you offer a bit of water during the annual water ceremony in-gathering service\, the Social Justice Team  invites you to also place an empty paper cup next to the congregational vessel in solidarity with Palestinians\, civilians in war-torn Sudan\, and Indigenous communities in Canada under drinking water advisories. \nUnitarians across America are augmenting the traditional In-gathering Water Ceremony to express solidarity with those denied access to water. This blog post from Unitarian Universalists for Justice in the Middle East provides reasons and resources for ways to express solidarity. \nThe day before the Water Ceremony\, decorate the cup with a keffiyeh pattern\,  a photo of healthy Palestinian children\, or another hopeful graphic to acknowledge another community.  UUs across America are taking this prayerful action in recognition of and solidarity with the 2 million Palestinians in Gaza who are denied potable water by Israel. Palestinian civilians are dying en masse of starvation\, thirst\, preventable disease\, and weapons of war. This summer\, the General Assembly of the UUA passed the “Solidarity with Palestinians” Action of Immediate Witness\, calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza. \nAt our EGM in June\, the  VanU congregation passed a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Israel/Gaza and a return of all hostages.  The Social Justice team hopes that this expression of solidarity will  spur discussions that may lead to the understanding and the transformation of the conditions faced by those who are denied access to clean water. There will be a table set up under the portico after the September 8th service. We will have handouts and a signup sheet if you would like to be involved in further discussions. \n

One Unitarian’s community work perspective on living in a world which seems to be in such a mess. \nMichael Clague writes\, teaches\, and works in the fields of adult education\, community development\, and social planning. He currently works as a private consultant and as a community volunteer. In the past\, he has served as Director of the Carnegie Community Centre\, Director of Programs for SPARC BC\, Executive Director of SPARC BC\, and as Executive Director of the Community Council of Greater Victoria. \nMichael is the recipient of several notable awards\, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian Council on Social Development and the Thakore Foundation Award for Service to the Carnegie Community Centre and Vancouver Eastside presented by SFU. DESCRIPTION:We will be meeting at 11 a.m. in the parking lot at Ron McLean Park (7820 Hedley Ave). From Boundary Road go east on Rumble some ways until south at Hedley Ave to the parking lot. \nThe trail at Byrne Creek Ravine park is all well-shaded and should take around an hour. The loop involves some steps\, around 200\, and some change in elevation. \nOur VanU hiking and walking group now meets the fourth Saturday of every month at a different location around the Lower Mainland. DESCRIPTION:For this online event on Wednesday nights\, we start with a talk about meditation given by Victoria Oginski\, how-to\, purpose and pitfalls. \nThe second half is a shared silent meditation\, based on traditional Buddhist techniques. Victoria Oginski\, has been a dedicated meditator for over 45 years. She is a Buddhist and has studied with many extraordinary Buddhist masters over the years in Canada\, Nepal\, India\, and Tibet. \nAlthough informed by Buddhist principles\, the facilitation is more universal in approach and everyone is welcome.
