SUMMARY:Water Ceremony Empty Cups
DESCRIPTION:As you offer a bit of water during the annual water ceremony in-gathering service\, the Social Justice Team  invites you to also place an empty paper cup next to the congregational vessel in solidarity with Palestinians\, civilians in war-torn Sudan\, and Indigenous communities in Canada under drinking water advisories. \nUnitarians across America are augmenting the traditional In-gathering Water Ceremony to express solidarity with those denied access to water. This blog post from Unitarian Universalists for Justice in the Middle East provides reasons and resources for ways to express solidarity. \nThe day before the Water Ceremony\, decorate the cup with a keffiyeh pattern\,  a photo of healthy Palestinian children\, or another hopeful graphic to acknowledge another community.  UUs across America are taking this prayerful action in recognition of and solidarity with the 2 million Palestinians in Gaza who are denied potable water by Israel. Palestinian civilians are dying en masse of starvation\, thirst\, preventable disease\, and weapons of war. This summer\, the General Assembly of the UUA passed the “Solidarity with Palestinians” Action of Immediate Witness\, calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza. \nAt our EGM in June\, the  VanU congregation passed a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Israel/Gaza and a return of all hostages.  The Social Justice team hopes that this expression of solidarity will  spur discussions that may lead to the understanding and the transformation of the conditions faced by those who are denied access to clean water. There will be a table set up under the portico after the September 8th service. We will have handouts and a signup sheet if you would like to be involved in further discussions. \n

DESCRIPTION:Michael Clague\n\nHow Do We Live Well in a World in Crisis? One Unitarian’s community work perspective on living in a world which seems to be in such a mess. \nMichael Clague writes\, teaches\, and works in the fields of adult education\, community development\, and social planning. He currently works as a private consultant and as a community volunteer. In the past\, he has served as Director of the Carnegie Community Centre\, Director of Programs for SPARC BC\, Executive Director of SPARC BC\, and as Executive Director of the Community Council of Greater Victoria. \nMichael is the recipient of several notable awards\, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian Council on Social Development and the Thakore Foundation Award for Service to the Carnegie Community Centre and Vancouver Eastside presented by SFU. We organize events such as the Lunar New Year  and the Intersection of Climate and Colonialism events held at VanU\, and  lead outings to various IBPOC events in the city\, some examples include tours of art galleries and museums\, plays\, restaurants\, protest marches\, and cultural celebrations. \nEveryone is welcome. DESCRIPTION:We will be meeting at 11 a.m. in the parking lot at Ron McLean Park (7820 Hedley Ave). From Boundary Road go east on Rumble some ways until south at Hedley Ave to the parking lot. \nThe trail at Byrne Creek Ravine park is all well-shaded and should take around an hour. The loop involves some steps\, around 200\, and some change in elevation. \nOur VanU hiking and walking group now meets the fourth Saturday of every month at a different location around the Lower Mainland. DESCRIPTION:Casey Stainsby\n\nPeople on each end of the spectrum of life\, young and old\, often express a desire to have more to do with each other. Why\, then\, do we often struggle to connect across generational gaps? So many aspects of our culture are designed to keep us apart that we find ourselves speaking different languages\, having different conversations and existing in different spaces. Let’s explore together some strategies from cross-cultural bridge building that might be able to help us get closer to those on the other side of the generational divide. Because we can’t afford not to. \nCasey Stainsby (she/her) is an aspirant for Unitarian Universalist ministry\, studying at the Vancouver School of Theology. DESCRIPTION:The Powell Street Festival is one of the largest and the longest-running community arts festivals in Canada\, located in Vancouver’s historic Japanese Canadian neighbourhood\, Paueru Gai – today known as the Downtown Eastside. The Powell Street Festival Society also offers year-round programs\, and collaborates with local organizations\, artists\, and communities. \nYou’re invited to attend with fellow Vancouver Unitarians for a guided tour of the Powell Festival with long-time VanU member\, Megumi. This is the 48th annual Powell Festival\, and the third straight year VanU members have attended as a group. The event is free and open to all! \nWe will be meeting 12 Noon on Saturday\, August 3\, at the corner of Dunlevy Ave and E. Cordova St\, at the entrance to Oppenheimer Park. DESCRIPTION:For this online event on Wednesday nights\, we start with a talk about meditation given by Victoria Oginski\, how-to\, purpose and pitfalls. \nThe second half is a shared silent meditation\, based on traditional Buddhist techniques. Victoria Oginski\, has been a dedicated meditator for over 45 years. She is a Buddhist and has studied with many extraordinary Buddhist masters over the years in Canada\, Nepal\, India\, and Tibet. \nAlthough informed by Buddhist principles\, the facilitation is more universal in approach and everyone is welcome. DESCRIPTION:The IBPOC (Indigenous\, Black\, People of Colour) Plus Allies  also known as the IPA\,  meets on the fourth Sunday of the month at 12:30pm in Lindsey Priestley room. \nThe IPA team fosters  greater understanding of IBPOC experiences. We organize events such as the Lunar New Year  and the Intersection of Climate and Colonialism events held at VanU\, and  lead outings to various IBPOC events in the city\, some examples include tours of art galleries and museums\, plays\, restaurants\, protest marches\, and cultural celebrations. \nEveryone is welcome.
