As our Communications Plan states, email lists “are used to distribute order of service, newsletters, group event information and internal communications. These are not ‘platforms’ as much as they are a means of distribution…” In other words, UCV’s Chat List and the other email groups are primarily for internal communications. In all our digital and online communications, we seek to reflect and model our values and principles as members of the UCV community.
The UCV Chat List group has been a great tool for sharing information and keeping members and friends of the congregation engaged. The following UCV Chat List Guidelines, which flow from our shared principles and our Communications Plan, are designed to safeguard this excellent shared resource:
- This group is a positive and inclusive space for the sharing of information about UCV and its engagement with broader communities.
- This group adheres to the principles of our Welcoming Congregation, ensuring that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, asexual, two-spirit, genderqueer, non-binary, and others who are part of the community but for whom those terms don’t fit feel fully welcomed, centered, and embraced.
- This group makes space for and elevates the voices of BIPOC, as part of our collective work of dismantling racism.
- This group is moderated with zero tolerance for ‘trolling’, defined here as inflammatory or bad faith engagement designed to provoke emotional reactions or to otherwise sidetrack and derail discussions.
- As much as our community welcomes and encourages deliberation and democratic debate, this group is not intended as a space for debating ‘controversial’ issues, and participants are reminded to be cognizant of the limitations and challenges of online communications and to encourage participants to join teams and other groups at UCV where more wide-ranging discussions can take place.
UCV Chat List moderation will be the responsibility of members, supported by the Membership Outreach Coordinator.
