My Name is Wolastoq – Film Screening and Discussion

April 21 @ 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm

Free

The Social Justice Team and the IPA Team will be co-sponsoring the screening of the film My Name is Wolastoq.  After viewing the film, there will be a discussion about Indigenous place names in the Vancouver area. Here is a Vancouver Sun article about adding traditional First Nations names to many civic parks and beaches in this area. Popcorn and snacks will be provided.

Film Synopsis:  For over 400 years, settler maps of what is now called New Brunswick have called the Wolastoq the St. John River. But the Wolastoq is the ancestral home, the life source, and the namesake of the Wolastoqiyik – the people of the beautiful, bountiful river – since time immemorial. As we follow a young Wolastoqi man striving to reclaim a culture eroded by colonialism, we see its parallels with the Wolastoq Nation’s fight to have maps and governments accept the true name of the Wolastoq river.
