David Buchan

David Buchan is a recently retired music educator with 27 years of experience teaching choir and band in Vancouver-area schools. He has led his ensembles to perform and compete in Japan, Western and Eastern Europe, Cuba, India, the United States, and across Canada. For 20 years, David served as Assistant Director and Accompanist for the Vancouver Welsh Men’s Choir, performing globally, including twice at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall.

 

David’s passion for music and dedication to nurturing musical talent stem from his early experiences as a performer. Originally from Alberta, he studied in California before earning a Bachelor of Music (BMus) in piano performance from the University of Victoria. After working as a professional musician, he returned to UVic to complete a Bachelor of Education (BEd), launching his teaching career.

Biography

A versatile musician, David enjoys singing and playing multiple instruments, including bassoon, trombone, trumpet, flute, clarinet, and saxophone. His early career included various “song and dance” gigs, enriching his diverse musical background.

David also serves as Assistant Director of the Vancouver Men’s Chorus (VMC), where he previously performed as a choir member in four transformative concerts during 1993–1994. Now in his third year as a director with the VMC, he continues to inspire through music.

David joined Vancouver Unitarians as Choir Director in 2024 and is excited to continue sharing his love of music with the community.
